The key to resolving these social ills

rests in the hands of a youthful generation convinced of the nobility of human beings; eagerly seeking a deeper understanding of the true purpose of existence; able to distinguish between divine religion and mere superstition; clear in the view of science and religion as two independent yet complementary systems of knowledge that propel human progress; conscious of and drawn to the beauty and power of unity in diversity; secure in the knowledge that real glory is to be found in service to one’s country and to the peoples of the world; and mindful that the acquisition of wealth is praiseworthy only insofar as it is attained through just means and expended for benevolent purposes, for the promotion of knowledge and toward the common good.

What is it about?

The Junior Youth Spiritual Empowerment Program (JYSEP) is a global educational process which seeks to develop the intellectual and moral capabilities of ‘junior youth’ – those between the ages of 11 and 15.

The program is conceived of as a ‘spiritual’ empowerment program in that it places emphasis on developing the qualities of the human spirit such as truthfulness, hope, generosity, compassion and excellence, as well as intellectual powers, such as scientific reasoning, analysis, creative thinking, expression and comprehension.

“They assist junior youth to navigate through a crucial stage of their lives and to become empowered to direct their energies toward the advancement of civilization.”

Moral and Spiritual Education

The program focuses on developing the moral and spiritual qualities of junior youth, helping them cultivate virtues like honesty, justice, and kindness.

Empowerment and Agency

It aims to empower young people by encouraging them to take ownership of their personal growth and to become active participants in their communities.

Service-Oriented

A core purpose of the program is to inspire junior youth to engage in acts of service, fostering a sense of responsibility towards the well-being of others and their surroundings.

Group Dynamics

The program is conducted in small groups, fostering a sense of camaraderie, mutual support, and collaboration among the participants.

Critical Thinking and Expression

It promotes critical thinking and the ability to express thoughts and ideas clearly, encouraging junior youth to reflect on societal issues and articulate their perspectives.

Cultural Relevance

In Singapore, the program is tailored to resonate with the diverse cultural backgrounds of the participants, fostering inclusivity and respect for different traditions and values.

Long-Term Development:

The program is structured as a long-term initiative, with ongoing activities that accompany the junior youth through their transition from childhood to adolescence, helping them navigate this critical period with confidence.

Community Building

Ultimately, the program aims to contribute to the broader process of community building by developing a generation of young people who are not only conscious of their own potential but also committed to the collective progress of society.

Some Bahá'í Writings

Blessed is he who in the prime of his youth and the heyday of his life will arise to serve the Cause of the Lord of the beginning and of the end, and adorn his heart with His love. The manifestation of such a grace is greater than the creation of the heavens and of the earth. Blessed are the steadfast and well is it with those who are firm.

Although your realities are shaped by a broad diversity of circumstances, yet a desire to bring about constructive change and a capacity for meaningful service, both characteristic of your stage of life, are neither limited to any race or nationality, nor dependent upon material means.

This bright period of youth you share is experienced by all—but it is brief, and buffeted by numerous social forces. How important it is, then, to strive to be among those who, in the words of ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, ‘plucked the fruit of life’.
